GROTTO SHRINES

Our Lady of Lourdes

On the 1st of October 1922, the Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary, the Grotto was blessed and dedicated by Father Thomas Nimmo Taylor.

This day was also the Silver Jubilee of the death of Sister Therese of the Child Jesus, later to become Saint Therese and known simply as The Little Flower.

The marble statues of Our Lady of Lourdes and Saint Bernadette were donated by a parishioner who was an ex-miner.

On the day of the solemn blessing Dr Cox, of Lourdes, presented Fr Taylor with a piece of rock from the original Grotto in Lourdes.

The work on the Grotto at Carfin was carried out by many local volunteers, who excavated and built the Shrine in honour of Our Lady of Lourdes.
