GROTTO SHRINES

The Miriam Chapel

This chapel was one of the features of the original Grotto.

The niche below The Miriam Chapel, excavated in 1924, was first used as a Calvary Chapel, donated by the Congregation of Notre Dame.

Later it was to be the altar for the Holy Souls, only to become at a later date a Shrine of the Holy Child Jesus.

Finally the shrine was to depict the tenth Station of the Cross, as it does to this day, Jesus lying in the sepulchre.

Below the Miriam Chapel hangs the Crucifix from the original Church.

Relief’s of the Seven Sacraments are also embedded into the foundation of the elevated Chapel, they were originally placed on Mount Assisi.
